MIAMI (AP) — While Miami Heat star Chris Bosh was out celebrating his birthday at a Morocco-themed party complete with live camels, police said Thursday that thieves made off with about $340,000 in jewelry from the player’s nearby home.
Miami Beach police spokesman Bobby Hernandez said the department received a call about 12:30 a.m. after Bosh and his wife, Adrienne, returned from the party at a bayside Miami nightspot. Hernandez said the couple noticed a jewelry drawer was open and numerous watches, rings and purses were missing.
There was no sign of forced entry at the waterfront, 12,368-square-foot home, which Bosh purchased in 2010 for $12.3 million. Hernandez also said easily traceable items such as Bosh’s Heat championship ring from last year’s NBA title were left undisturbed.
“We think it was probably an inside job,” Hernandez said. “It’s very difficult to prevent crimes such as this from happening.”
Police were interviewing Bosh’s housekeepers and anyone else, such as a contractor or repair person, who may have recently had access to the home. They were also fanning out to check local pawn shops for the stolen items.
Bosh, celebrating his 29th birthday, arrived at the party Wednesday night via helicopter and a yacht. Numerous local and social media sites reported that most fellow Heat players were there, including stars LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, many of them dressed in Saharan garb.
Guests were greeted by a pair of camels — Henri and Jacob — at the door and the birthday cake was a jewel-festooned chocolate elephant ridden by a miniature Bosh figure. Entertainment included belly dancers and fire eaters.
The 6-foot-11 Bosh, now in his ninth NBA season, is averaging 16.7 points and 6.7 rebounds for the first-place Heat. His actual birthday was March 24, but the celebration was delayed until Wednesday.

Last month, New York Giants nose tackle Shaun Rogers signed a new one-year contract with the team for just over a million dollars. According to a CBS Miami report, a collection of jewelry worth close to half of that was swiped from his hotel room at the Fontainebleau Monday morning.

Rogers, 34, told police he left his room around 1 a.m. with some friends and headed to Club Liv. While at the club, Rogers and his group allegedly met a woman who the group would bring back to Rogers' room, according to Miami Beach Police.
Rogers told Miami Beach Police he put his valuables in the room safe when he returned around 7 a.m. and the party continued until the nose tackle fell asleep. According to police, Rogers said at 12:30 p.m., he awoke and found the woman the group had met the night before was no longer there.
Once he realized the woman wasn't there, Rogers told police he tried unsuccessfully to get into the room's safe. Hotel security then came to the room and was able to pry open the safe and found Rogers' valuables were missing.
Among the items Rogers said were stolen were: diamond earrings worth $100,000; two wristwatches worth a combined $160,000; a gold necklace with gold pendant worth $50,000; gold bracelets worth $60,000; and a diamond Cuban necklace with a gold pendant worth $70,000.
The total amount of those items - $430,000 - is only $3000 less than how much the 34-year-old Rogers will make if he ends the 2013 season on injured reserve like he did last year.
The 12-year NFL veteran, who was arrested in 2010 on a felony gun charge for having a loaded gun in a carry-on bag at Cleveland Airport and fined $400,000 by the league despite having the charges dismissed, has earned around $30 million during his playing career.
Regardless of his prior income or whether the assortment was insured, why is Rogers rocking nearly half a million in jewelry like he's a starlet at the Oscars anyway? For that kind of money, he could've supplied Buzz Bissinger's wardrobe for two years.
